A local crime boss pursued a wounded man into the parish church and shot dead Jesuit priests Javier Campos Morales and Joaquín César Mora Salazar, who had tried to shelter him.

The killings drew international condemnation of cartel violence against clergy in the Sierra Tarahumara. Mexico is among the most dangerous countries for Catholic priests in the Americas.
