On the evening of September 13, 2026, a sound bomb detonated near the Greek (Rûm) Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George (Mar Jirjis / Aziz Yorgi) in Hama’s Al-Madina neighborhood, Syria, on the eve of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. SyriacPress, citing the Assyrian Monitor of Human Rights, said two masked people on a motorcycle threw a sound bomb near the cathedral, causing material damage and no reported casualties. SANA and official Syrian media described a sonic/sound bomb with property damage only. Some early local reports mentioned an IED and ambulances; later coverage settled on a sound bomb with material damage and no injuries. Investigation ongoing; perpetrators’ identities and motives remain unclear.

Coordinates are the Nominatim city pin for Hama (35.1343368, 36.7496276) — Nominatim did not resolve a place_of_worship pin for the cathedral. Some early social posts named other Orthodox churches in Al-Madina (e.g. Entrance of the Virgin Mary); SyriacPress Arabic/English and YDH identify the target as Mar Jirjis / Aziz Yorgi (Saint George) Cathedral. Official media called it a sound bomb; Syria Justice Archive (via YDH) disputed that framing and described IED damage indoors and outdoors.
