Suicide bombing at Mar Elias Church

A suicide bomber detonated inside the Greek Orthodox Church of the Prophet Elias in Damascus’s Dweila neighborhood during Sunday liturgy. The Syrian Network for Human Rights recorded 25 civilians killed and 63 wounded; later tallies ran as high as 30 dead.

It was the deadliest attack on a Damascus church in years and the worst single church massacre logged in this ledger for 2025. Islamic State was widely blamed.
