Midland man charged with smashing church sign with sledgehammer

Midland Police said a caller reported a man walking with a sledgehammer about 3:30 p.m. on August 2. Officers suspected Austin Johnson destroyed one side of Trinity Lutheran Church's electric sign at 3701 Jefferson Avenue. He remained jailed awaiting a probable cause hearing for malicious destruction of property of more than $20,000.
