Siege at Our Lady of Salvation

Gunmen from the Islamic State of Iraq stormed Sunday evening Mass, took the congregation hostage, and fought security forces for hours. Fifty-eight people were killed, including two priests and a large number of worshippers.

The assault was among the deadliest single attacks on Iraqi Christians and accelerated the postwar exodus from Baghdad’s historic churches.
