Coordinated night raids on Christian farming communities over Christmas 2023 killed more than 140 people in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi — later tallies from church and civil-society sources ran toward 160–200. Homes and churches were burned.
Plateau’s Middle Belt violence is often described as farmer-herder conflict; church leaders and field investigators report repeated, targeted attacks on Christian villages. Nigeria accounted for about 72 percent of Christians killed worldwide in the Open Doors 2026 reporting year.
